Trick or Treat

An overactive imagination
Left awake
Waiting
For decades now
On a night
That might take me back
To a holiday
Stolen away
To a time
When I would
Have readily accepted
Unblinking red pupils
From the shadows
Spilling out of my closet
A naked branch
Turned scaly tentacle
Scraping my window
The sulphuric reek
Announcing
A demon’s arrival
Or any terror
Fit to storm the wall
I built between myself
And the real horror
Living one room over
Looking a lot
Like me
