Outside Observations

Headless and
Disemboweled
Below the nest
One of my babies
Or a mother teaching
For certain cannot say

Budding talons
Belong to a hunter
All that remains
Speculation
And brutal reminders
Of what life
Is like outside
Our barriers

Suspect
Brother coyote
Or smirking fox
Sniffing around trunks for
The feathered fruit
Of spring

Accident
Or infanticide
For a stronger sibling’s
Greater good
A sacrifice
We cannot imagine

Uncertain
If it even matters
But like to think
The only reason
I found half a body
Is because mom
Still interrupted supper
On wings of holy hell
No doubt
Completing a tragedy
With the entire troupe
Performing their roles
To perfection
