Muir's Nightmare

Polished granite domes
Of inconceivable size
And character
Silver skull caps
Swarming with insects
Sit in silent contemplation
Above ancient intermingling
Redwood
Ponderosa and cedar

Titans of rock and wood
And long defeated flesh
Now look down on this valley
With a sense of weathered
Resignation

Whitewater and winter storms
Fall through a vacuum
Its captors
Would have you believe
Still exists
The remains
A forgotten skeleton
Left flattened
At the base
Of a towering temple
Now treated
As a threat
To insecure egos

One man’s sanctuary
Turned carnival
A unique consciousness
Abandoned and left disfigured
By those who shadowed
His trail
But never
Followed the leader
