Inexorable Horizon

We invented your face
And swinging arms
To make sense
Of the enveloping chaos
And though
You react accordingly
When observed and measured
There is something subversive
Taking place
When our backs are turned
Or eyelids drop
Some paradox
Of perpetual motion
Gaining velocity
When it’s presence
Isn’t even possible

I blinked
And blew out a candle
As a dozen birthdays
Turned to dust
Friends rotted on the vine
Blood turned bitter kerosene
Lovers fled a time
Space and matter
Consuming black hole
Possibly thinking
This void was something
Of my design
Rather than the
Downhill building emptiness
Through which we all pass
